Breadth
Throughout the semester you have spent time exploring and experimenting with different approaches to 2D design. Now it is time to put together the Breadth section of your portfolio. Take a minute to review the College Board's information on this section (page 20):
Studio Art Course Description
About the Breadth Section:
The breadth section of your portfolio should show your range of skills in 2D Design. The breadth section needs to compose of 12 finished pieces of artwork. These pieces can be made from any medium or variation of mediums. Any subject matter can be portrayed.
What Readers are Looking for:
Your breadth section should show a strong understanding of the elements of art and innovative uses of the principles of design. The pieces that are submitted for this section should be unique and engaging. Although each individual piece is evaluated on it’s own the breadth section is scored together and will average the overall quality.
Curating Your Breadth Section:
When selecting pieces to submit in your breadth section you should only choose finished, final pieces. These pieces should be at mastery level. Each piece needs to show your strength in a different skill, it should be unique and unlike any other in your portfolio. Be sure you are showing a range of approaches to 2D design.
When working on your Breadth section, be sure to:
· clearly show experimentation and a range of conceptual approaches to the work
· demonstrate exploration, inventiveness, and the expressive manipulation of form, as well as knowledge of compositional organization
· understand that you may demonstrate a range of approaches in a single medium or in a variety of media. If you choose a single medium, the images must show a range of approaches, techniques, compositions, and subjects
· submit the correct number of images
· submit images of different works of art than those you submitted for your Concentration section:

Breadth Organization
If you have not already done so, create a folder titled “Breadth.”
In the folder place all of your TAL pieces (finished or not).
Sort through your other work from last semester or even last year and place any piece that you are considering for your Breadth section into this folder. This should include photographs, traditionally created artwork (paintings, drawings, etc), as well as pieces from last semester projects. Even if pieces are not finished, if you think it may make a good breadth piece then place it here.
Number all artwork in your "Breadth" folder, start with 01 and go until you have numbered them all (you should have at least 20 but hopefully more).
Fill in the "Breadth Checklist" You may check off up to one (but no more) requirement in each of the sections (principles of design, subject, technique, and content) for each piece. You may fill this out digitally or by hand.
Evaluate your "Breadth Checklist" to see if you have enough variety in each of the pieces.
Fill out the "Breadth Check-Up" questionaire on a new blog post. Include your "Breadth Checklist" (take a photo if you have completed it by hand or attach the document if you completed it digitally).
