Mentor Project Digital Art
Due Date: October 1st, 2015 (start of class)
Objective:
In this project you will be choosing the work of a master photographer to research, to emulate, and to inspire your own unique artwork.
Explanation:
There are four parts to this project:
1. Research
You will choose a master artist to research and create a page on your website to compile all of your findings. See section guide for expectations.
2. Replication
You will find one photograph that you admire from your master photographer and recreate it to the best of your ability. You should choose a photograph you are able to recreate with the resources you have available. You may change or adjust small elements of the photograph but you should try to match the atmosphere, story, lighting, and subject of the photograph.
3. Reimagine
Here, you will use the style and technique of your master artist as inspiration for your own photograph showcasing your own unique idea. This should be based on the work of your master artist but should not be a replication. Think about what you learned during the research and replication, what interested you about this artist, then try and put your own twist on it.
4. Reflection
In this final section you will reflect of your process throughout the whole project. Why you chose the artist that you did, what interested you about the artwork, what ideas you came up with along the way. You can be candid about your struggles as well as your successes.
Requirements:
· A webpage on your website for this project
· All text in your own words
· Research matching the research guide expectations
· One Replication photograph (also include on your site the original photo that you replicated)
· One Reimagine photograph
· Reflection on process
· High craftspersonship (finished, final, edited)

Researching artists will help you understand the art world and grow as an artist. For this project you will research master photographers and choose one photographer to investigate deeply. Throughout your research you should record your findings on a web page on your site. All text on your website should be in your own words – not copied (plagiarized). You are then asked to replicate (to the best of your ability) one of his/her photographs. Following that you will reimagine a piece inspired from your photographer but with an idea all your own. Lastly you will write a reflection of your process in this project.
Research:
Bio - This section should include general information about the life of the artist. Things that might be included are: important dates (birth, death, graduated, most famous piece made, etc), important places (where lived, worked, etc), family information, important events in the artist’s life, education, other jobs, why they are famous, other important or interesting pieces of information about the artist.
Overall Artwork - This section should talk about the artist’s artwork on a large scale. What was the artist most known for? What topics did he/she investigate in the artwork? What mediums and/or techniques did they use the most? What are the main subjects of the artwork?
Replication:
Chosen Artwork - Here you will choose one artwork for your “replication” piece. Include the photograph as well as information about it on your webpage. When was it made? Why was it made? What is the meaning behind it? Is it part of a series or body of work? What is the history behind this piece? Why is it important? Include image of chosen artwork.
Your Replication - Include your replication photograph here. Explain the process of taking your photograph. Talk about the difficulties or struggles you had. How do you feel about the finished piece? What did you learn about the photographer by copying his/her style? You may also want to include photographs/sketches/journaling of your process.
Reimagine:
Include your recreation photograph here. What has this research and replication inspired you to create? Explain the piece you made and the connection to your artist. What element from the artist were you trying to keep? What elements did you incorporate that were all your own? What ideas does this give you for creating next? You may also want to include photographs/sketches/journaling of your process.
Reflection:
This section should be a completely personal reflection about why you chose this artist. What drew you to his/her artwork? Why were you interested in it? Why do you like this work? Write about the process of researching and replication and how it led you to create what you did. How did you engage and persist? What was the most challenging part? How did you stretch as an artist? How successful do you feel your artwork is? What have you learned from this project?
