Artists Observe: Realism Unit
Objects and the Indoors
Activity #2: Proportions
One of the basic practices of drawing realistically is learning to see proportions of what we draw. We practice this so we don't end up with a normal sized person with a giant head or a bicycle with miniature tires (unless that is what you are trying to do of course).
Step #1: Watch this video
Step #2: Try for yourself
On the table you have a variety of bottles and vegetables. Using a pencil try and draw these items with the most accurate proportions as possible. Be sure to use the pencil as a measurement tool to measure not only the height but also the width and the different parts of the bottles and vegetables. Take your time.
Step #3: If you have extra time . . .
Move to a different part of the table and try the drawing again from a different angle.
